CITATIONS - ARE THEY NEEDED?

What Are Citations?

If you own a business, you will inadvertently create citations when you add your business's details to different website directories  A citation is where your name, address, phone number ( NAP) and website URL is published somewhere online. An example of a directory is Yellow Pages Online or maybe an organisation that you are a member of or it can be in a more unstructured format such as a press release or newspaper article where your business is described and your NAP I mentioned through the article. After time this information would be indexed by Google and the dot will be connected to your business listing to your Google My Business listing.

If you have citations published online that do not match your GMB listing detail you will have inconsistencies that can negatively impact your Google rankings and presence in a local Google search. This may happen if you move premises, change your phone number or even change your business name. It I important if you are starting out with a new website or a new Google my business, to actually keep track of where you add your details so that you can go back and amend them if you do have a change of details.

Having citations listed on well regarded and trusted sites has the added benefit of giving your website extra backlinks as well as the consistency of your details across the web.Good quality citations will also add authority which will come back to give higher rankings in a Google local search for competitive, higher valued keyword phrases.
